After 19 years as House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi will step down after the 2022 midterms. One possible replacement is New York Democratic Rep. Harem Jeffries.
Typically the position would fall to one of the lieutenants under Pelosi, either Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer or Majority Whip James Clyburn. However, both Hoyer and Clyburn are in their 80’s. Many in the Democrat Party are looking for younger faces to fill leadership positions.
Rumors are that the Democrats are looking for a historic placement leaving white males at a disadvantage for the job position. So, it is unlikely Hoyer or Clyburn will take the spot. This new ‘requirement’ would benefit Jeffries as the first Black American to hold the spot.
One reason for Pelosi’s sudden step down may be due to recent backlash over her wealth. While her salary is a meager $200,000, she and her husband are worth over $100 million, thanks to investments in stocks, real estate, and venture capital.
When asked if political officials should be banned from these corporate entrepreneurship options, she rejected the statement claiming the US is a free-market economy, and everyone should have the freedom to invest in it. A somewhat hypocritical statement from a leader of the Democratic Party, who is supposedly regulating these companies.
